Eroticism of attention

With Sara Torres and Lama Norbu

What does the “eroticism of attention” mean and what does it consist of? Can attention be a form of love? In what sense can eros be a binding force and not just a disordering energy?

Simone Weil said that attention is the purest and rarest form of generosity, since it is that which allows us to be completely available to reality without imposing anything on it. Along the same lines, in the Buddhist tradition it is considered that the cultivation of mindfulness predisposes us to an open and lucid presence that allows us to see beyond the appearance of things. We could therefore affirm that mindfulness can be a form of love, an absolute receptivity that invites the other to reveal itself as it is.

Western tradition gives us by inheritance a disordering Eros, which opens the present time to the risk of desire, transformation and change. Beyond being a denominator that signals tumultuous beginnings, we are interested in this course in studying alternatives where the erotic serves to name a type of attention and binding participation. During the first weekend of May, with the light and temper of spring, we will meet to read, comment and share ideas and texts around erotic attention, understood as a way of knowledge that requires the affective and sensory bonding of the body. The meeting will combine theoretical seminars, reading groups and guided meditation sessions.
